5th & 6th graders big end-of-the-year project was to create a giant, pop-art sculpture of a snack food. Students were given a small reference photo of their snack choice and, for the first time, used the grid method to accurately transfer their image onto a large scale paper. Students had to mix their own acrylic paint colors to match the values of the snack. For small details, we used a white oil-based paint pens and black Sharpies. To finish off our projects, we made our work 3D! We cut a back matching the size of our painting, stappled both large papers together (leaving a short side open), stuffed crumpled newspaper inside (like a pillowcase) and stappled it shut. I think we hold a record for most stapples used in a school day BUT TOTALLY WORTH IT!

5th & 6th Grade - Giant Snack Pop Art
7th & 8th Grade - Magazine Collages
For this project, 7th & 8th graders were given the task to create a collage based off of a reference photo. Students first used the grid system to accurately transfer their image. Then, students cut pieces from old magazines to match the textures and color values of the reference photo. Special shout out to the student who completed his fish collage one-handed. Way to go, artists!!

7th & 8th Grade - Texture Animals
7th and 8th graders did an outstanding job with their texture projects! With this project, we learned techniques on how to use oil pastels. It’s not just coloring like you would with your everyday Crayola crayon. Using blending and layering of their oil pastels, students were able to create realistic implied textures. Then, we created actual texture by embossing aluminum foil and staining the metal to bring out the texture lines.

5th & 6th Grade - Value Shading Ghosts
This lesson introduced to students shading in shadows, created by a light source. We discussed the effects of light on an object such as where light is hitting will be a lighter and where the light is not touching, is darker.
Goals
- Understand the elements of form and value.
- Learn how to use different values to draw a realistic ghost form on a 2D surface.
